Yay! getting my cast off!

Next week I'm getting my cast off my wrist and thumb and can start biking again! Gotta get rid of some of these pounds I've put back on.

On another note, the Goodwills in my area sell adult bikes for $10-$20 - pretty good deal.

NY Times article on fitness and biking

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/17/health/nutrition/17essa.html?em&ex=1184904000&en=445dd068a9c39626&ei=5087%0A

interesting article on biking and fitness - my experience has been totally different. Not really dieting or watching what I ate, just biking more (about 200 miles/week), I've lost 50 pounds and have kept it off for more than a year, which is the standard of measurement - keeping your weight off for more than a year.

Most people can lose weight, but the trick is keeping it off. That's my incentive to keep biking - so I can keep off the weight! (and still eat all the pasta I want - incentive #2)

getting a bike - finding the time

Can't afford a new bike? Join freecycle.org & sign up - plenty of bikes are being given away - post a wanted ad if need be. Or inquire about tradeins at your local bikeshop - I got my 10 speed for $50 this way. Or your local thrift - Goodwill here had a couple of bikes for $10 each. Or Craigslist.

No time - make it part of your daily routine. Hit the yardsales on your bike - this stops you from buying too much, too :-). Bike to work if you can. I average 200-250 miles a week - and I don't have to watch what I eat! I have a ride along trailer so I can bike & see my 7 year old son!

You need to get a helmet!

First things first - get a helmet! Go to a real bike store if you're not familiar with the fitting of bike helmets - you might pay a little more, but your head is worth it, isn't it? I just survived a collision with a van 3 weeks ago - the helmet saved my life - I walked away with 3 broken bones. I was very lucky. And get some for your kids too!
